According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2009 is the Year of the Ox. The Ox, or the Buffalo sign symbolizes prosperity through fortitude and hard work but I guess 2009 is also filled with huge surprises. Saturday was one hell lot of surprising day when Congress and it's allies swept a clean victory in the 2009 Indian elections. The final results showed that the coalition led by Congress had defied predictions of a hung Parliament by winning 262 seats.

The Congress win looks even more illuminating when you consider the party did not contest all seats in big states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, etc. They also took UP and Bihar head on.The gamble did not click in Bihar, but it did in UP. The Congress has not seen that kind of success in Uttar Pradesh for a very very long time. I guess the Rahul Gandhi factor has worked wonders for them...

The surprise box got bigger on Monday when the Sensex crossed the 14k mark. Trading was halted for the day as markets hit 20% upper circuit. Some of my friends in the money biz speculated that the fantastic election result is the key factor of this cheerful jump in the stock market. It was a historic moment on Dalal Street and a much more joyful day for the stock market investors. Sure I made a few rupees here and there on Monday, and thank God for that...the lull in the stock market had left my shoe budget a little dull ;) LOL

The people of India have given their verdict as to who they think can lead them. I hope the government successfully takes our country to new heights of glory. I think the youth leadership should give a fresh perspective to the governance.Young political leaders like Milind Deora, Sachin Pilot, Rahul Gandhi and others will hopefully bring about the much awaited change in our country. It would be great to see them infuse fresh ideas and polices into the system, surely a youthful outlook to our systems would be a welcoming change.
